How We Justified Racism

I grew up in Queens in the 1950s, at the time, one of the least developed boroughs of New York City.

Mine was a middle-class neighborhood, comprising dozens of newly built six-story buildings, divided into thousands of apartments, inhabited by families who could not quite swing the mortgage for a house in Levittown Long Island.

We were all white.
